GEORGIAN CIVILIZATION: WHENCE DOES ITS HISTORY START?

There can be drastically differing answers to this question, yet each can be relevant and wellgrounded. Thus, some may hold that the history of Georgian civilization should start from the time of creation of a single Georgian state with a common Georgian culture and national self-consciousness, i.e. from the 10th century. Others may consider the 4th century to be the beginning of the history of Georgian civilization, for at that time Christianity was declared the state religion which laid a firm foundation for the development of Georgian national culture and consciousness.

I personally believe it admissible to commence the history of Georgian civilization from the time suggested by the medieval Georgian conception as found in Kartlis Tskhovreba (hence for ward abbreviated to KTs) - "History of Georgia", namely, with ,King Parnavaz. I do feel and understand the complexity of such a conceptualization of the question. Therefore my views are highly hypothetical and I shall try to set down only some of them. However, first a few words on how civilization should be understood.

FORGIVE US MR. ZVIAD!

Mr. Zviadi is the symbol of sacrificing to the homeland, boundless love to his nation and dedicating to it that is why he was assassinated so young by the forceful death. He deserved to be built monument in his life the monument for the total love. The fact that there still is his ruined house in the downtown of Tbilisi as a symbol of inaccessibility of the evil indicates to the immorality of the government and servile subordination by the nation. I ask the family and announce bank account where we, still not degenerative Georgians will be able to collect some means to restore “Kolkhuri Koshki” and bring the past greatness to it. This will be reflection of a little respect that Mr. President deserved by his life. For all us this will be the best opportunity of showing our gratitude and loyalty to the great Konstantine and his descendants.

Forgive Mr. President!

The Nomenklatura Revanche in Georgia

Cup

Following the collapse of Gorbachev’s Novo-Ogarevo process, and recognizing the inevitability of the Soviet Union’s disintegration, the Soviet leadership decided to create a new Empire model, the so-called C.I.S., which was to be established at a meeting planned for 21st December 1991 in Alma-Ata, when the leaders of the Soviet Republics were to sign an agreement establishing the new political entity. My refusal to attend this meeting was the development which triggered Moscow’s decision to overthrow Georgia’s legally elected Government. And no time was lost.

On that very day, 21st December, when the attention of the world was focused on the meeting in Alma-Ata, rallies began outside Tbilisi’s Parliament building. One rally was attended by supporters of the legal Government, and another consisted of the armed so-called ‘opposition’, infiltrated by officers of the Russian Army. Armored cars and military vehicles appeared on the streets. The anti-government forces began to shoot at unarmed supporters of my Presidency, and several people were killed.

CAUCASIAN GEORGIA – A BRIDGEHEAD OR A STRONGHOLD OF THE MODERN GEOPOLITICAL GAMES

"Faced with the necessity of effective control of the Caucasian passes, which barred the way of the northern invaders, the rulers of the states of the Eastern Mediterranean-Middle Eastern area were always eager to have in Central Transcaucasia – in Iberia – a political organisation with sufficient strength to fulfil such a defensive function. The concept of the Caucasian Gate predetermined the fate of the GeorgianState from the Early Hellenistic time till the beginning of the nineteenth century, when Georgia’s annexation by Russia meant the loss of this important function of this state. I think, this function was the reason that Georgia, as pointed out by Cyril Toumanoff, is the only country of Christendom where socio-political and cultural development ran an uninterrupted course from the Classical period to the beginning of the nineteenth century.

This overwhelming interest of the Near Eastern-Mediterranean societies in Georgia was caused not only by the abstract defensive function of this country, but mainly by its concrete location at the edge of the civilised and barbarian worlds".

Independent International fact finding Mission on the Confflict in Georgia Ambassador H. Tagliavini

Questions which the Commission is to answer quite definitely and unequivocally, are:

1. Is the fact of creating by force in Georgia’s territory a territorial political unit for non-Georgian ethnical group, who has an ethnical territory of its own outside Georgia and who is a diaspora, of naming this unit by the ethnonym of that diaspora and maintaining it by force, into indefinite future, a violation of most vital natural interests of Georgia, i.e., an aggression against Georgia and a lasting war against Georgia? If yes, then the Mission is to define, what legal or morally imperative ground there may be for restricting Georgia’s right and its government’s duty to defend its territory from this violence by any means, including arms?

2. Is it, or is it not, to be considered an ethnical cleansing and a genocide, when more than hundred georgian villages disappear, as a result of murderous massive violence, in a territory of 4500 square kilometers? If "yes", then is or is not, in the view of the Mission, (and if "not", what are then the grounds for that "not"?) Russia responsible for those crimes, committed in the presence of Russian forces, including the "peacekeeping" ones, with Russian arms and with Russian air and artillery support, in a puppet "republic" which never existed an hour without Russian military presence there?

3. Is, or is it not, known to the Mission the fact of declaration by Putin in the Russian TV that Georgia is to be "punished" by Russia, which means nothing less than usurping by Russia the right of "punishing" a neighboring country without trial and investigation?

4. Are there, in the Mission’s view, specific conditions and circumstances that make it possible or, even more, desirable and justified to legalize the demographic and political results of ethnical cleansing and genocide? If "yes", which are those conditions and what is the time within which those deeds become pardonable?

It is very difficult for us to escape the sad assumption that the antigeorgian (which, in the present context, means prorussian) bias of so many diplomats and experts may have one more motive. For two centuries _ from the Russian Tsar Peter I up to Nicolas II _ the central european intelligence and expertise (embodied, mainly, in the numerous bureaucracy, mentioned above) and the Russian resources (both the natural and the human) were combined to build up the second great and later the second strong empire in the World. It is natural to think that both parties to this alliance are eager to revive it in order to build up a mighty economical (and not only economical) body able to successfully compete with any other body on the Globe. This goal, if it exists, is natural and honorable. But the Commission, we believe, is not to be guided by pragmatic motives. Its only guide should be the truth, regardless of the possible consequences of exploring it, and truth is the only thing which is to be rigorously followed (fiat justitia, pereat mundus). Yet, if it is going to be decided, that practical results (stability, balance, etc.) are the most important goal, then it should be kept in mind, that (as we noticed before), demographical growth cannot become a ground for changing the status of a territory unless we want to stimulate "preemptive" ethical cleansing and genocide all over the World.

Abkhazia at the begining of 19th and 20-30 years of 20th centuries

After the official Moscow recognized the „independence" of conflict regions of Georgia, senior representatives of the Russian Federation interested of the history of these regions, specifically its falsification. They argue that in the early 19th century, Abkhazia became part of Russia alone, but after the Sovietization (1921 g.) as though seen as an equal with Georgia, a republic that Stalin only in 1931 entered into Georgia in the status of autonomous republic. In fact, the territory of modern Abkhazia became part of a „patronage" of Russia as a historic Georgian province, and again became part of Georgia (but not under the authority of the Bagrationi, but the Romanovs).

After the February-March 1921, Soviet Russia conquered Georgia, the Georgian and Abkhazian Bolsheviks temporarily declared Abkhazia Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) and subjected her Caucasian Bureau (leader G. Orjonikidze), the Central Committee of Communist party of Russia. But even in this situation in Abkhazia has been de facto under Tbilisi. In December 1921, between Abkhazia SSR and Georgia SSR signed an agreement. By the first Constitution of Georgia SSR (1922 g.), SSR of Abkhazia was part of the Georgia (Chapter I.1). The chapter also adopted the Constitution of Abkhazia of 1926.

In the first constitution of the Soviet Union (1924 g.), which was above the constitutions of other republics, Abkhazia is not mentioned as SSR, but as an autonomous republic (Chapter IV, 15). In February 1931, that name was stated in the Constitution of Abkhazia (then constitution of Georgia). Really happened only renaming, which was not affected by certain powers of the constitution. As before 1931 and after, Abkhazia was and remaind part of Georgia.

Mankind's First Alphabet

Sumerian-Georgian Asomtavruli-Majuscule

Mankind's first alphabet whose creators were Sumerians, has been discovered. Georgians call this alpabet Asomtavruli (Majuscule) and they even used to employ it in the past. It is a cosmic alphabet, where the sun and the moon are used as letter-signs. Each letter-sign (35 in all) reads like a philosophical book. They contain mysteries of the universe, among them the sun and moon calendar with a precision to seconds, unknown to science up to the present time. The Sumerian language, considered a dead language for about four milleniums, is still alive in the ancient dialects of the Georgian language-Svanian and Megrelian. The Svan people living in the mountainous part of Georgia have saved the religious cults of the Sumerian pantheon of deities. This great discovery unveils a great many mysteries of our life. It can also become an ideological instrument of instituting peace, cooperation and unity among the inhabitants of the earth, which is sure to undermine all political or religious confrontation.

Soviet-Georgian War and Sovietization of Georgia, II-III. 1921

By Andrew Andersen and George Partskhaladze

Revue historique des Armees Numero 254, 1/2009

In the year 1918, Georgia restored her independence from Russia. This became possible as a result of World War I and disintegration of the Russian Empire due to its failure to withstand a tremendous pressure endorsed by the war effort. During its three years of independence, Georgia’s moderate socialist leadership was rather successful in the establishment of a democracy-track society. However, the development of democratic processes in the First Republic faced a number of challenges that included involvement in military conflicts with Turkey, Armenia, as well as the “Reds” and the “Whites” of Southern Russia, economic blockade by Western powers, delay of international recognition, internal conflicts and subversive activities of local Bolsheviks encouraged by the Bolshevik regime in Moscow.

Sociolinguistic Aspects of Language Maintenance: A Study of Ethnic Georgians' Language in Turkey

According to ethnic Georgians in Turkey people, history and language are closely connected here. They know who are the by the language they speak. It joins them to their history and their past which is so full of struggles. Language is their culture. As Fishman cites: "most of the culture is in the language and is expressed in the language".

Why do the ethnic Georgians save their language since they have no political, economic or global relevance? Because the value of traditional language is in their integrative, rather than instrumental, pragmatic or function (Dorian 1978:608; Rouchdy 1989:96; Spolsky 1995:179). Georgian language has a symbolic value, an integrative function in that it plays an important role in maintaining the group's identity.

Anzor TOTADZE - "THE OSSETS IN GEORGIA: MYTH AND REALITY"

The present book highlights the anatomy of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict and on the basis of analysis of Georgian and foreign literary sources and official demographic data it discusses the issues of Ossets migration to Georgia in the XVII-XIX centuries and of the aboriginal population of Tskhinvali. It also displays the absurd consideration of the Ossetian dilettante scholars on “South Ossetia” joining Russia in 1774, the unprecedented facts of distorting the history of Georgia and their efforts to misappropriate the Georgian cultural heritage. By the offcial statistical data living standard of Ossets in Georgia is the highest in the former Soviet Union.

DECLARATION

by a group of political parties, public organizations

and persons belonging to the National Liberation Movement of Georgia

Georgian President M. Saakashvili has repeatedly expressed his readiness to found a "South Ossetia" in Georgia once again, i.e. to officially give one part of Georgian territory the ethnic name of a neighbouring country (Alania-Ossetia) and recognize this part of Georgian territory as a southern part of the neighbouring country's ethnic territory, which means that Mankind is to face the task of uniting two "Ossetias" - one real and the other false, _ i.e. the task of depriving Georgia of a part of its territory, which we regard as a direct and open betrayal of the nation and the state. We deem it our duty to state our stand on the mechanisms of the armed conflict that has been inspired and organized by Russia and is under way in the Tskhinvali region (Georgia) now, and on the ways of resolving it. We will give Georgian citizens, including Georgians and Ossetians, and the world community a few main pieces of information on the factors and conditions of the conflict in order to help to expose the propaganda lies that are being disseminated on this problem by Russian political circles, the Russian media, and the Georgian media that are under the authority or influence of Georgia's pro-Russian government.

SOS!

Gott segne Sie!

Iberia's and Kolkhida's Territories Annexation in the name of Democracy

The Ossetians are an Iranic ethnic group (not Caucasian) indigenous to Ossetia, a region that spans the Caucasus Mountains. The Ossetians mostly populate Ossetia-Alania in Russia. They speak Ossetic, an Indo-European language of the Iranian branch. Relatively closely related languages are the other Eastern Iranic languages like Pashto.

"Ossetians came to Georgia as agricultural workers. As the ones who were given shelter. Thus, the Russian census conducted in the end of the 19th century lists 15 thousand Ossetian families in Eastern Georgia. There was agricultural population, who had no property or land of their own."

"By using these purely agrarian tensions, the Bolsheviks organized an armed Ossetian uprising in the northern part of central Georgia back in 1918. It was a rebellion against Georgia, which back then was independent. Under the guise of a national movement. But really it was an agrarian movement of agricultural workers. It was taking pretty brutal forms. Georgian side took police measures against the armed uprising. But these measures were brought to naught."

"After Russia invaded Georgia in 1921, the Caucasus Bureau of the Bolsheviks decided to complete the job and set up the South Ossetian Autonomous Region."

"Even for one hour Ossetian territorial autonomy on the Georgian soil has never existed and will never exist without the presence of Russian regular forces."

"Russia has always been promoting Ossetinization of those territories. When that administrative region was being created, Ossetians had always been a minority. Most of the Georgian population had to leave their lands and now they are in the position of refugees. Russia was pursuing the same policies in Javakhetia and Abkhazia."

" It’s been a while since Moscow has been persistently pursuing the policies of "Georgia without Georgians".

The war in Georgia is over.
Small democratic Georgia is ruined, defeated and finished by Russian fascists due to mismanagement and mistakes of her leadership but mainly by the inactivity and inertia of "the West" that did nothing to help the people who believed in freedom, democracy tolerance and other values of our civilization.

But it is not only Georgia who has been defeated. It was a defeat of all and everyone who loves freedom, dignity, human rights, etc... From now on, we all will keep losing our rights gradually but rapidly and will soon have to do lots of things that we would normally not like to do.
I hate saying that but I cannot say anything better noi matter how hard I would try.

Tribute to all brave Gergian soldiers who died for their country and for all of us.

Playing “unpredictable past” for the sake of dubious future:

response to Chochiyev from the overseas

Read it in Russian

Earlier REGNUM published South Ossetian Vice Premier Boris Chochiyev’s lecture in Georgia’s history. Some of his theses have received lively response from whoever interested in the subject. Since Chochiyev’s Georgian colleagues try to avoid discoursing on history and say that politicians and state officials should act on the basis of the present-day national and international law rather than some historical interpretations, REGNUM has asked to comment on the subject the professor of history and political science, expert on the Caucasus Andrew Andersen from the Center for Military-Strategic Studies of the University of Calgary.

Some time ago Eduard Kokoity, leader of the self-proclaimed "Republic of South Ossetia", a tiny part of the Georgian region of Shida Kartli, presently controlled by an illegal “South Ossetian army”, with the support of Russian “peacekeepers” – stated that he would seek the incorporation of that area into the Russian Federation. Kokoity’s initiative is based on some mysterious “historical document on the accession of united Ossetia into the Russian Empire in 1774.”

But in 1774 there was no “united Ossetia”, Mr. Kokoity and other expansionist campaigners keep talking about; nor was there any Ossetia as such. Of course, people speaking various Ossetian dialects lived on both slopes of the Big Caucasian Range, but most of the Ossetians inhabiting the territory of the present-day Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (historical regions of Alagiria, Kurtatia and Tagauria and most of Digoria) were ruled by Kabardian feudal lords, and their lands were, respectively, part of Kabardia, which, in its turn, was formally subordinate to the Crimean khans – vassals of the Ottoman Empire. The territory of the present-day self-proclaimed “Republic of South Ossetia” and the historical area of Tualia-Dvaleti (Tualia is now in North Ossetia-Alania) was part of the eastern Georgian Kartli-Kakheti kingdom and, by no means, separate from Shida Kartli.

In fact, they have never been separate from Eastern Georgia. This fact is proved by all serious historians of the past and is not argued by anybody, except for some new “historians” of the last years, who, nevertheless, have no proofs of their “revolutionary” views (though political adventurers hardly need their proofs).

8 February 2006
Basque premier named Doctor Honoris Causa

The Basque president, Juan José Ibarretxe, has travelled to Georgia, to be named Doctor Honoris Causa. The Tbilisi State University has decided to confer this honour to Ibarretxe for "his efforts to promote human rights and strengthen the ties between Tbilisi and the Basque Country."

"It is an honour to be given recognition by an academic institution. It is an honour, because there is no freedom without education; there is no sovereignty without education; it is not possible to progress, to generate welfare, if this is not done based on a foundation of critical citizens, of educated men and women and therefore, the fact that a Basque Lehendakari is honoured  thousands of miles from home, sharing his home here with you, is indeed a trememdous honour. Yet there is alos no freedom without respect for human rights and without respect for the different Peoples of the Earth such as yours and ours."

"Small Basque people, which is a nation, is also respectful of other peoples and cultures. We are a people that wishes to live together with other cultures and in our own modest way help to make this planet a little fairer and a little bit better. We want peace in Euskadi and we want peace in the world. And I want to tell you that we are going to achieve peace for the Basque People and that achieiving peace in Euskadi means a contribution on the part of the Basque People to peace in the world."

"And we shall do this in the only way possible: through dialogue. The Basque people is a civilized, peaceful and essentially hard-working people that has its own identity and dignity."

"We existed thousands of years ago, when there existed no states or nations in the world as we know it today; none of us knows what political structures there will be in the world in the future."

"I don't know whether the current nation states, states or nations will constitute the legal formulas that will exist in two thousand years' time, but I should like to assure you of one thing: the Basque people existed two thousand years ago and the Basque people will continue to exist in two thousand years' time, legal formulations will exist, because peoples, individuals, when they are aware of themselves, do not just disappear - and careful with identity! Nobody should ask us to give up our identity under the pretext of globalization, because individuals, families and peoples who give up their identity, who have no memory, cease to be individuals, cease to be peoples, and become ghosts."

"And it is not the aim of the Basque people that they should become a ghost; we wish to keep our identity and our language alive, we wish to adopt a universal culture and, yes, of course, humbly contribute what we are to that universal culture."

"For Basque society, for Basques, working for and achieving peace and finding a model for warm relations between Euskadi and Spain, between Euskadi and the world, has become our greatest political aim for the 21st century."
