born on November 21, 1862, in Tbilisi, Georgia
Gabashvili started drawing
at an early age, at the same time learning German and
French languages. In 1881 he went to art college of
K. Keppen. In 1883 Gabashvili went to
Sankt-Peterburg. In 1888 he graduated from the
Sankt-Peterburg Art Academy and returned in Georgia.
In Georgia Gabashvili became
a famous painter. In 1891 he had his first personal
exhibition in Tbilisi.
In Spring of 1894 Gabashvili
left for Middle Asia and created there his brilliant
Scetches of Samarkand and Bukhara.
In 1894-95 he graduated from
the Munchen Art Academy.
In 1896-97 Gabashvili
travelled in Greece and Italy.
Gigo Gabashvili is famous
also as a teacher. In 1897 he established his Art
Studio in Tbilisi. He was an active participator of
establishing the Art Academy in Georgia and was
invited as a professor (1922-30).
Gabashvili during his long
working period created more than 2000 works.
He was awarded the title of
People's Artist of the Georgia (1929).
Gigo Gabashvili died on
October 28, 1936, in Tsikhisdziri, Adjara, Georgia.
